What a Month!

What a Month!

What a month it has been!  In just a few short weeks, we have managed to add 360 chickens, 9 new cows and 2 dogs to our home.  I think you can definitely say we’ve started a farm!  Are we crazy? Maybe, but our plan is to offer better quality food for our customers and our family while humanely raising our animals.

It’s been months in the making.  Endless days and nights of planning, researching, purchasing equipment and making sure the land was ready.  We were able to find a company to build our rotating chicken houses and have them delivered and on October 6th our first set of chickens arrived!

Our journey here wasn’t without a few bumps in the road.  The chicken processing plant closest to us and the one we planned on using just recently shut its doors.  We went into a bit of panic mode looking for a Plan B.  Luckily, we found a new place and we have reserved our spots.  Our first set of chicken will be available for sale the first week of January, but you can email us now to reserve your purchase.

We’ve always had cattle on our property, which has been family owned for seven generations.  But when we decided to start this farm, we knew we needed to increase our herd size. Over the last few weeks, we have been to several cattle auctions in South Texas and have purchased some very nice quality heifers and bulls.  Several of the heifers we purchased are bred which means we’ll have some new baby calves soon.  We plan on adding beef to our product line by next spring.

Oh, and about those dogs, well our daughter has been begging for a dog of her own so just by chance we came across a person selling goldendoodles, which is a poodle and golden retriever mix.  And you know how it goes, why get one dog when you can get two?!  So, we welcomed Rose and Miles (cue the Golden Girls theme song) into our family.  Who needs rest; you only live once!
